This article will explain what energy savings are, how they are calculated, and how you can discover your building's energy savings.
What are my energy savings and how do are they calculated?
Your energy savings represent the amount of energy your building conserves by using GlacierGrid. To calculate this, GlacierGrid uses a methodology called IPMVP or International Performance Measurement and Verification Protocol. IPMVP is an industry standard savings methodology created by the US Department of Energy that is used by Fortune 500 companies to help calculate energy savings by taking weather normalization into account.
Why do we use weather normalization?
Your building uses more energy when the weather is more extreme. Weather normalization adjusts your energy bill to show what you would have used if weather did not impact energy usage.
The IPMVP Methodology
- Collect 12 months of historical weather and energy data.
- Use regression analysis to determine the relationship between weather and energy at each specific site.
- This determines a heating coefficient and a cooling coefficient.
- Collect the most recent month of weather and energy data.
- Use the coefficients to remove weather’s impact on the energy bill.
- Subtract the weather normalized energy bills to see savings.
- Example: July 2023 weather normalized energy cost - July 2022 weather normalized energy cost.
How do I find out what my energy savings are?
If you would like a report of your energy savings reach out to support@glaciergrid.com for a calculation of either your total or monthly energy savings. You will need to provide or give us access to your energy bills from your provider. Those can be submitted here.
